To all you horse people out there, HOW DO YOU WATCH ANYTHING WITH A HORSE WITHOUT CRYING? No,  I mean it! How do you do it?

When I was 16 my first horse colicked unexpectedly and had to be put down. Since then I can barely make it through a Budweiser commercial without reaching for the Kleenex. I can watch 10,000 people die in a movie, but as soon as a horse stubs their hoof I am in hysterics. Which means that I may not be the best judge for a list like this, but oh well, take it with a grain of salt.

So, when I want to have a good cry (because let’s face it, we all have those days) I turn towards these 5 horse movies.

I mean this movie is seriously unfair. Not only does it have the rugged, gorgeous, and uber talented Viggo Mortensen, the movie also features the most stunning American Paint, RH Tecontender (as well as a few understudies!). The human and equine eye candy  is enough to make me want to watch this movie on any night, but it is the story that makes it a real tear jerker. Without giving spoilers it is a story of one man’s bond with his horse and the incredible sacrifices they make for each other. Even though this movie is centered around an impossible tale in a land far away, it is relatable to every horse person out there.

What really pushes this movie over the top for me is knowing that Mortensen bought RH Tecontender after filming because he loved the horse so much.

2.Spirit

Admittedly I have not watched this movie since I was 9. I remember it being a total emotion-fest even at that age. So, the thought of reliving it as an ultra-sensitive adult does not sound like fun. However, it is another epic horse tale of freedom, and the unbreakable spirit of horses. Not to mention it was nominated for a slew of awards and the movie is voiced by Matt Damon.

Side Note: After reading the Wikipedia synopsis to refresh myself for this post I was tearing up. Why horses, why?

3.Black Beauty

Do I even need to discuss the part where he sees Ginger on the cart, or works in the freezing cold/rain, or just wants his freaking cooler!?!? This movie from start to finish sends me over the edge.

4. Flicka

I’m talking about the 2006 reboot with Tim McGraw. All and all my eyes stayed pretty dry during this movie and it was an enjoyable horse flick. But, as most horse people know there is always the climatic twist. And at Flicka’s climatic twist I was gone, totally incoherent. I regained control of my tear ducts shortly after though and was able to finish watching the fairly decent horse movie.

*Warning! This next section has a mild spoiler!*

Want to know when I started crying in this film? The opening credits.

My boyfriend took me too see this one in the theaters (big mistake). I spent the ENTIRE film ugly sobbing onto his shoulder. When I did open my eyes I caught glimpses of pure war tragedy, unbreakable friendships, and the best horse story I have ever seen. Even if you don’t like horses this movie truly is fantastic. From the actors, to the script, to the cinematography this movie has everything.

Except for a complimentary box of tissues. About 3/4 of the way through I managed to gain control of myself. Perhaps it was my heart becoming numb to the horrible pain. And then….THERE WAS A HAPPY ENDING. I MEAN WERE THE WRITERS TRYING TO KILL ME? To a horse owner who has experienced the unspeakable pain of loosing a horse, (and fully expecting that ending to the movie) watching this horse and owner reunite after everything was almost too much. It was so emotional. The happy tears just started flowing and they didn’t stop until after I had gotten home.

Go ahead pop in those films, make yourself some homemade popcorn and get reacquainted with your tissue box. I want to hear your favorite “ugly cry” horse film so comment below! And as always please share this post on Facebook, Pintrest, and with family and friends.

Happy Trails,
