Wait, you want me to feed that “cha cha cha chia!” plant to my horse?

Chia seeds, they’re a lot more than that toy we all secretly wanted growing up. One company is debunking the myths surrounding chia seeds while demonstrating their benefits for your horse. US Chia believes that safe, natural, and chemical free foods are not only fundamental to good health, they can be simple and effective too. They provide US grown seeds as a supplement for horses. The best part about the company (other than their awesome commitment to their seeds!)? Most of the crew owns OTTBs!

I caught up with them this past month to talk about my blog and their company. We did a little guest posting for each other (read my post here) and had a lot of fun! Read on for the ONTF Equestrian Blog’s first ever guest post from US Chia.

If you want to learn more about US Chia check out their Facebook, Instagram, or website or simply email them at wesley@uschia.comNow on to the 5 myths of Chia seeds. Enjoy!

Chia Seed Myths - The ONTF Equestrian Blog

Let me guess: You’ve been hearing a lot about chia seeds lately. These tiny superfoods have been taking over everything from your morning smoothie to your evening salad, and it’s no wonder! Packed with protein, amino acids, fiber, and vital minerals, chia seeds are one of the world’s best supplements – but not just for humans! You can share your seeds with your horses as well, for incredible benefits you’ll have to experience to believe.

Here at US Chia, that’s just what we’re going to help you do – experience amazing results from one, all-natural supplement that even your picky eaters will love. But along the way we’ve heard some pretty hilarious myths about chia seeds that we thought we’d share.

5.  Chia seeds were invented in the 70s

Nope! Chia seeds were made popular by the immensely trendy Chia Pets in the 1970s, but there are records of Aztec cultures cultivating chia seeds and using them as a diet staple thousands of years ago. The Mayans even believed that eating chia seeds gave them superpowers!

4. Chia seeds might be good, but man are they expensiveChia Seed Myths - The ONTF Equestrian Blog

Sometimes people experience a little sticker shock when they look at the cost of feeding all natural, US-grown chia seeds to theirhorses. But the truth is, US Chia is here to help you replace your hoof, gut, coat, joint, weight, and allergy supplements with one easy-to-feed grain additive. The best part? The United States Equestrian Federation approves chia seeds for competition on all levels!

3. Chia seeds have to be soaked and ground to be effective

Unlike many other natural supplements, chia seeds have a soft shell which means they don’t have to be soaked or ground up to be effective. The shell dissolves quickly and horses experience the full benefits just from being fed US Chia seeds as a dry top dressing to their regular grain.

2. Chia seeds are going to grow plants in my pastures

This one always gives us a chuckle. Don’t worry though, feeding US Chia seeds to your horses isn’t going to turn you into a chia farmer! We heat our seeds after harvest to protect your pastures and prevent accidental growth.

1. Chia seeds can’t do everything you claim

Believe it or not, there is so much power packed in each US Chia seed that they really can help achieve an incredible variety of health benefits. You can learn more about how and why US Chia seeds do all the amazing things they do by clicking HERE.

I use chia seeds for my horse. I just did the horse poop in water test for sand. I didn’t find any sand but I did fine chia seeds. Is that normal? Am I just seeing a shell with the nutrients taken out? Thanks for your help.

    Hi Lori!

I would reach out to the company who produces your seeds. They would absolutely give you the best answer. You can also reach out to U.S. Chia! They are wonderfully responsive and you can contact them via their website at uschia.com
